Meta Releases Muse Wonder, Its First Frontier AI Model Built for Long-Running Agents
Wonder Full tops 56 on Artificial Analysis, but memory benchmark scores come only from Meta's own evaluations

Meta released Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full on October 12, 2026, marking the company's first entry into the frontier AI model tier and the most significant milestone yet for Meta Superintelligence Labs, the division built under former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang. The two models — developed under the internal codename "Watermelon" — introduce a pair of capabilities Meta calls Active Memory and Active Focus, which the company argues give Wonder-class models a structural advantage in the long-running agent tasks that enterprise and developer customers increasingly demand. Independent scores from Artificial Analysis place Wonder Full fourth overall on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, within two points of the top-ranked model, but the company's most prominent benchmark claims rest on evaluations designed and administered by Meta itself.
Meta's First Frontier Push Comes Over 16 Months Into the Wang Restructuring
When Alexandr Wang joined Meta in June 2025, the Muse family consisted of lightweight conversational models — capable enough for chat, but not competitive with frontier offerings from Anthropic, Google DeepMind, or OpenAI. The product roadmap Wang inherited ran from Muse Spark through image-generation and voice-transcription variants. None of those models was positioned or evaluated as frontier.
That changed on October 12. Muse Wonder Full's 56-point score on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index puts it within two points of the top-ranked Claude Opus 5.5 (58), ahead of Fable 5.1 (53), GPT-6 Astra (53), and Gemini 4 Argon (53). The base Muse Wonder scored 52, slightly below those three competitors on the same independent scale. Wang called the pair "true frontier models" at launch, and Zuckerberg told the Financial Times that Meta intends to significantly accelerate the pace of model development and is already working on moving to the next stage of the Muse model family.
The models were trained at Meta's Prometheus data center in Ohio — a gigawatt-scale facility that represents Meta's first large-scale in-house compute investment in AI training rather than inference.

How Active Memory and Active Focus Work Below the Marketing Layer
The technical claims Meta is staking most of its positioning on involve two architectural features: Active Memory and Active Focus.
Active Memory is a persistent context retention system that maintains representations of user preferences, standing instructions, and ongoing task state across separate conversation sessions. Unlike session-bounded memory in most competing models — where context resets between conversations — Active Memory stores information between interactions and retrieves it on subsequent sessions. According to Meta's research blog, the design goal is to make the model capable of remembering what matters to a user over days, weeks, months, and beyond. Meta tested the feature against MemoryBench, a benchmark developed with its own research team (arXiv:2510.17281) that evaluates memory construction and continual learning — areas where few established third-party benchmarks exist.
Active Focus is an agentic execution framework trained to reduce model stall rates in multi-step tasks. When a Wonder model encounters an obstacle — a failed API call, an unavailable resource, an unexpected intermediate result — rather than surfacing an error and halting, it attempts alternative approaches before checking back in with the user. According to Meta's launch materials, the model was specifically trained to try other approaches when it hits roadblocks rather than stopping and prompting the user at each setback. Before taking consequential or irreversible actions, the system is designed to confirm with the user first — a check-in pattern that Meta evaluated against FocusBench and SWE-Marathon agent persistence benchmarks.
Independent Scores Tell a More Complicated Story Than the Company Benchmarks
Muse Wonder Full's 56 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index is a credible independent data point, measured by a third party with a track record across multiple model generations. That number places Wonder Full ahead of Fable 5.1, Astra, and Argon on a general-quality dimension — and ties it with two Claude models, putting it fourth overall in Artificial Analysis's rankings of more than 689 evaluated models.
But the two capabilities Meta most prominently markets — Active Memory and Active Focus — are measured on evaluations Meta designed and administered. MemoryBench (arXiv:2510.17281) is a Meta-authored benchmark. FocusBench and SWE-Marathon results cited at launch were all produced under Meta's own testing conditions. No independent research group has yet reproduced the MemoryBench or FocusBench scores for Muse Wonder against competing systems.
This matters because a competitor like Claude Opus 5.5 — which scores eight points higher than Wonder Full on Artificial Analysis's general index — has not been evaluated against MemoryBench under equivalent conditions. Meta's claim that Wonder outperforms Fable, Opus, and Astra on memory tasks is, at this stage, a company claim rather than an independently established fact.
A Two-Tier Access Model Built Around a Subscription
Meta is distributing the Wonder models through two distinct access paths. Muse Wonder is available through the Meta Model API at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens — an OpenAI-compatible API endpoint (base URL: api.meta.ai/v1) that supports drop-in replacement for applications already using the OpenAI or Anthropic Python SDK.
Muse Wonder Full has no public API equivalent. Access to the more capable model requires a Muse Code subscription at $50 or $200 per month, depending on usage limits. Muse Code is Meta's terminal coding agent product, and gating Wonder Full access to its subscribers mirrors the approach OpenAI used with GPT-4-class access through ChatGPT Plus in earlier years. For developers seeking pure API access at the highest capability tier, Wonder Full is currently unavailable.

Privacy Incidents and a Safety Tier Gap Add Uncertainty to the Launch
Two concerns surfaced in the 24 hours following the release. First, a subset of Muse users reported that the app appeared to access personal messages — including SMS and email threads — without explicit per-session authorization. Wang disputed the characterization in interviews, framing the incidents as permission-management issues and emphasizing the model's safeguards. The underlying question — whether Muse's Active Memory system makes data access permissions clearer or more opaque to average users — has not been resolved.
Second, Meta's claim to have introduced its strongest CBRN and cybersecurity safeguards to date applies specifically to paid-tier accounts. The company has not disclosed equivalent restrictions on free-tier API access, suggesting that the most safety-sensitive protections are not uniformly enforced across all access modes.
What Meta Needs to Prove in the Months Following the Watermelon Launch
Muse Wonder Full's position on Artificial Analysis's index is real and confirms that Meta has entered the frontier tier. The two-point gap below Claude Opus 5.5 is meaningful but not disqualifying. What remains genuinely unresolved is whether Active Memory and Active Focus represent the architectural step-change Meta claims, or whether those features — evaluated only on company-designed benchmarks — perform as advertised when tested by independent researchers under equivalent conditions. The specific benchmark Meta needs external validation on is MemoryBench: if third-party evaluators reproduce its scores against Fable, Astra, and Opus, Meta's agent-persistence narrative gains real credibility. If they don't, the product story shrinks to a capable but not uniquely differentiated frontier model with an unusual pricing gate on its best tier.
