Claude Code Product Lead Cat Wu Leaves Anthropic for OpenAI Core Products
Cat Wu joins OpenAI Core Products to build reliable agents, weeks before Anthropic IPO

Cat Wu, who served as head of product for Claude Code and helped grow it into a $2.5 billion-plus run-rate business, left Anthropic at the end of October and announced on November 5 that she is joining OpenAI to work on its Core Products division — a move that lands as Anthropic prepares for its first public market listing and OpenAI races to consolidate its own agentic platform.
Wu's last day at Anthropic was October 30. She announced her departure from the company on X on November 3, then followed that two days later with the news that she is joining OpenAI Core Products, saying she wants to build agents that are "actually reliable."
The hire represents one of the more significant direct exchanges of product leadership between the two frontier AI companies at a moment of intense competitive pressure across AI coding and agentic platforms.
From Index Ventures to Claude Code
Before joining Anthropic in August 2024, Wu spent nearly three years as a partner at Index Ventures, one of Silicon Valley's most prominent early-stage venture firms. Prior to that she was an engineering manager at Dagster Labs and a product engineer at Scale AI, giving her a background that spanned technical execution and investor-level market analysis before she took the product lead role at Claude Code.
At Anthropic, Wu oversaw Claude Code's expansion from a command-line tool used primarily by developers into a full agentic coding platform embedded in editors, desktop applications, and enterprise workflows. She outlined her philosophy in a March 2026 post on the Anthropic blog titled "Product management on the AI exponential," arguing that the accelerating pace of model capability required product teams to operate on shorter feedback cycles and discard assumptions faster than any traditional software lifecycle allowed.
By February 2026, Anthropic's Series G announcement disclosed that Claude Code's run-rate revenue had surpassed $2.5 billion — more than doubling since the start of the year — and that Claude Code was responsible for approximately 4 percent of all public GitHub commits worldwide.
Wu's Role in OpenAI's Agentic Ambitions
On November 5, Wu posted on X that she is joining OpenAI's Core Products team, writing that she wants to build agents that are "actually reliable." OpenAI President Greg Brockman also welcomed Wu publicly on X.
The announcement aligns with a major reorganization OpenAI carried out in May 2026 in which the company merged ChatGPT, Codex, and its developer-facing API into a single core product group under Brockman's leadership. In that restructuring, Thibault "Tibo" Sottiaux, who had led Codex, was named to run OpenAI's core product and platform teams. Nick Turley, who had led ChatGPT from launch and helped grow it to more than 900 million weekly active users, moved to a new enterprise products role. Ashley Alexander, a former Instagram vice president who had been leading OpenAI's health products, took over consumer product.
Wu's hire into this unified structure represents a direct acquisition of institutional knowledge about how agentic coding products are built and scaled. OpenAI's Codex launched a standalone desktop application in February 2026 and reached more than a million downloads in its first week, making it the product most directly competitive with Claude Code in the agentic coding category.
A Competitive Signal Before IPO
The move arrives at a symbolically freighted moment for Anthropic. The company filed its Form S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission on October 26, 2026, applying to list its Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker ANT. The filing disclosed first-half 2026 revenue of $16.3 billion, up approximately 1,300 percent from the same period a year earlier. Full-year 2025 revenue was $4.6 billion. Press reports at the time placed Anthropic's target listing date in the week of November 16. Anthropic's most recent private valuation was $965 billion, set during its $65 billion Series H in May 2026.
Wu is not the first Claude Code team member to leave in the weeks surrounding the IPO window. On October 24, 2026, Thariq Shihipar and Anthony Morris, two engineers closely involved with Claude Code, each announced their own departures on the same day. Shihipar, who posted under the handle @trq212, said he left after more than a year working on Claude Code and that the product had grown well beyond what he initially expected.
The clustering of departures from one team in a compressed window before a high-profile IPO is unusual but not without precedent. Pre-IPO periods often accelerate vesting timelines and trigger reassessments of equity value versus the opportunity cost of staying, particularly in a talent environment as competitive as the one now surrounding frontier AI coding tools.
A Brief Interlude at Cursor
This is not the first time Wu's relationship with Anthropic involved a detour. In early July 2025, Wu and Boris Cherny — the engineer who created Claude Code — briefly joined Anysphere, the maker of the Cursor AI coding editor, as head of product and chief architect respectively. The move was first reported by The Information on July 1, 2025. Approximately two weeks later, both Wu and Cherny returned to Anthropic. The episode underscored the intensity of competition for the small number of people with direct experience building agentic coding products at scale.
Her departure now — to OpenAI specifically, and to its Core Products division — is different in both destination and apparent permanence. Wu joining the team overseeing Codex and OpenAI's unified agent platform, bringing with her firsthand knowledge of how Claude Code was designed, priced, and distributed, represents a material competitive development that both companies will likely be tracking closely in the months ahead.
